5 Red Flags Your Adrenals Are Overworking

How many cups of coffee did it take to get you through this morning? Does your day feel like a marathon you never signed up for?

If you’re currently hitting that dreaded 3 PM wall: where the screen starts to blur and the only thing on your mind is a mid-afternoon latte or a secret stash of chocolate - you aren't alone. In our "always-on" culture, we’ve been conditioned to believe that exhaustion is just a prerequisite for success. But in my experience as a naturopathic doctor & Ayurvedic practitioner, I want you to know that your body is trying to talk to you. Stop pushing for a moment and aknowlege what you feel - it may be bone deep fatigue that you are desperately trying to run away from.

When your adrenals (those tiny but mighty glands sitting atop your kidneys) are constantly pumped for cortisol to meet the demands of stress, they eventually start to sputter. This is the "health debt" we often talk about in ayurveda for burnout.

Here are five red flags that your adrenals are overworking and how to spot them before you hit total burnout.

1. The "Wired but Tired" Feeling

Have you ever felt physically exhausted all day, only to have your brain switch on the second your head hits the pillow? This is a classic Vata imbalance symptom. Your nervous system is so habituated to being in "high alert" mode that it forgot how to power down. If you’re tired at 2 PM but suddenly get a "second wind" at 10 PM, your cortisol rhythm is likely flipped. In Ayurveda this is typically a vata imbalance but common with Vata-Pitta types that are pushing through.

2. The Afternoon Energy Crash

The 3 PM (or it can be 4PM) crash isn't just about what you ate for lunch. It’s often a sign that your adrenals can no longer maintain steady blood sugar or energy levels throughout the day. Instead of reaching for more caffeine or sugar - which just whips an exhausted horse, it’s time to look at why your battery is sitting at 1%.

3. Irritability or "The Fiery Burnout" (Pitta Imbalance)

Do you find yourself snapping at your partner or feeling irrationally angry at a slow driver? When we are pushed to our limits, our internal "heat" rises. These Pitta imbalance symptoms: irritability, impatience, and feeling "short-fused"- are your body’s way of saying it has zero resilience left to process external stressors.

4. Sleep Issues and Waking Unrefreshed

If you’re sleeping ~8 hours but waking up feeling like you haven't slept deeply, or if you're waking up between 2 AM and 4 AM with a racing mind, your adrenals are likely out of balance - they can no longer cope. This combination of dosha imbalance symptoms signals that your body is struggling to enter the deep, restorative stages of sleep needed for repair.

5. Intense Salt or Sugar Cravings

When the adrenals are overworking over long-term, they use up minerals at an accelerated rate. If you find yourself craving salt or sweets constantly, your body is desperately signaling for quick fuel and electrolyte balance. This may also point to other hormone imbalance as well around monthly cycles.
